One stitch
at a time.
Since 2013 in Norman, Oklahoma, StreetKnits is a humanitarian knitting charity dedicated to warming bodies and hearts.
Made by hand, together.
Our mission
StreetKnits is a charity project that attempts to support homeless people by donating knitwear to shelters.
One stitch at a time.
Warm neighbors since 2013.
Silke Feltz, founder
Since 2013, StreetKnits has been the passion and perpetual project of founder Silke Feltz.
Find your knitting zen
She aims not only to keep her neighbors warm, but also to help students, teachers, and members of the community find their knitting zen. Currently, StreetKnits operates from Norman, Oklahoma.
Honestly, we can't end homelessness.
What we can do is deliver hope one stitch at a time: a hat, a scarf, a pair of socks, handed to someone who needs it tonight.
Why it hits home
Dr. Silke Feltz is from Germany, where cities are generally required to give emergency shelter to people who would otherwise sleep outside. Coming to the United States, she saw how different that is. Dr. Feltz also points out that in Germany, the system tries to spot people on the brink of losing their home and steps in with welfare support before they end up on the street. That gap is part of what started StreetKnits in 2013.
Small gifts will not close a gap like that. They do reach real people, every winter, thirteen years running.
Out of every 100 people counted as homeless, how many had no shelter at all?
without any shelter sheltered or housed in emergency care
These are shares of people counted as homeless, not of everyone in the country. Counts: about 47,300 of 531,600 in Germany (federal report) and 266,320 of 745,652 in the US (HUD count). Counting methods and years differ, so read this as a picture, not a ranking.
You can be the reason someone doesn't freeze.
Tonight, when you are in bed, under the covers, warm and snug, remember that someone out there doesn't have that comfort. One gift, one hat, one stitch can change that for them.
